A new drug that could help erectile dysfunction and promote other health problems is being tested on a drug that's been approved to treat erectile dysfunction, researchers said Friday.
The study, which involved men who took two pills of the drug, found that Viagra could be a better treatment for erectile dysfunction than other medications, such as Propecia.
The researchers were told the drugs could help patients who have low sex drive, or low libido. However, the drugs aren't approved for treating erectile dysfunction because of their side effect profile.
The drugs are FDA-approved for use in men, and they're often prescribed by doctors for women who are overweight or obese, according to the study, which was funded by the National Institutes of Health.
Viagra was initially tested on men who had problems getting or keeping an erection when taking the drug.
Dr. John S. Wolfe, the lead author of the study, said the drug's benefits could lead to more people finding it helpful to take the pill.
"We don't know when it might be that it will work," Wolfe said.
In a study of more than 1,000 men with erectile dysfunction, the researchers were asked to take one of the pills at bedtime.
Patients were given a combination of pills, which contains the drug as well as a placebo, and asked to take one pill in the morning, and one pill in the evening.
The drug was tested in healthy men who had trouble getting an erection, and in patients who had problems with the ability to have sex.
The pills also weren't tested in patients taking the placebo, which is taken orally, Wolfe said.
Patients taking Viagra were given two pills in the morning and one pill at night, and were asked to take one pill in the morning, and one pill in the evening. When the dose was raised to take effect, the two pills were taken at about the same time, Wolfe said.
He said he wasn't sure whether the drugs might be useful for people who have problems with low sex drive.
The drugs were not tested for side effects, although they're often prescribed to men who have a low sex drive.

Sidney Wolfe, chairman of the American College of Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, said the drug could be helpful in helping people who have low sex drive or who have an ED problem.
"It might help people who are already healthy," he said.
Viagra was initially tested on men who had trouble getting an erection when taking the drug. The drug is FDA-approved to treat erectile dysfunction, but doctors have been reluctant to prescribe it because of the side effects.
Paul Chlebowski, who works with the FDA on drugs and women's health, said the drugs are a safe and effective treatment.
"They work for most people, but in a very short amount of time," Chlebowski said. "The drug is very effective for many people."
Originally published: March 16, 2014 at 3:00 AM MDTThere were some other drugs that were tested that could help some men with erectile dysfunction, such as some drugs called "tricyclics" or those that lower blood pressure and work to relax blood vessels.
But the drugs were not tested in people who had problems with getting an erection, or having a heart problem, Chlebowski said.
"They don't work in the same way as Viagra and Propecia do," he said.
And there was little evidence of effectiveness in helping men with ED, he said.
Michael E. Goettler, director of the American Society for Sexual Medicine, said the drugs were only designed to treat ED, and there was no evidence that they helped men with ED. But he said the drugs could help women who have a low sex drive or a diabetes, or people who have had a heart attack.
Robert Tiefer, a spokesman for the FDA, said the drug may help treat erectile dysfunction by increasing blood flow to the penis, and that the drugs could be an effective treatment for ED in women.
